Rick Carlisle Explains Key Lineup Adjustment for Indiana Pacers

Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle recently shed light on his decision to tweak the team’s lineup, a move that has sparked discussion among fans and analysts alike. With the Pacers sitting at 11-15 after a rollercoaster start to the 2024-25 season, Carlisle revealed his reasoning during a post-practice interview on February 19, 2025, ahead of a matchup against the Chicago Bulls.
The pivotal shift involves reintroducing Aaron Nesmith into the starting lineup at small forward, a position he held before a two-month ankle injury sidelined him. During Nesmith’s absence, Bennedict Mathurin stepped up, averaging 18.2 points per game, but Carlisle opted to prioritize defense over scoring punch. “Aaron gives us a physicality and versatility on both ends that we’ve been missing,” Carlisle said. “Benny’s been terrific, but we need balance right now.”
The Pacers have struggled defensively, ranking 27th in the league with a 116.8 defensive rating. Nesmith’s return—highlighted by a 12-point, 6-rebound effort in his first start back against Detroit on February 13—offers a solution. His ability to guard multiple positions complements All-Star Tyrese Haliburton and Pascal Siakam, who have shouldered the offensive load. Meanwhile, Mathurin’s suspension and subsequent bench role signal Carlisle’s intent to maintain lineup fluidity.
Carlisle emphasized adaptability as the season progresses. “We’ve got 11 guys who can play, and I’m not locked into one look,” he noted. “This is about finding the right mix for now, not forever.” The move also reflects the Pacers’ long-term vision after their Eastern Conference Finals run last year, balancing youth development with immediate competitiveness.
The decision paid dividends in a 111-100 win over the Pistons, but tougher tests loom. With Haliburton regaining form post-hamstring injury and Siakam’s steady 20-point average, Carlisle’s gamble could stabilize a team hovering around .500. As the trade deadline nears, this tweak might also signal confidence in the current roster, quieting rumors of major moves. For now, Carlisle’s focus is clear: defense first, flexibility always.
